ARCHIVES

ARCHIVE & LIBRARY specialising in LOCAL & FAMILY HISTORY

Since 2004 the Swaledale Museum has opened its archives to the public. It contains over 50 boxes of material and a small library of publications on local subjects. It is continually growing. Thanks to our status as Archive Ambassador we are linked to North Yorkshire Record Office, and have many of the guides to their collections on hand for you to consult on site. We are also linked to the Upper Dales family History Group who can give specialist advice.

We have our archive online via the SWAAG site - click here to access.

The Archive, like the Museum is run by volunteers so we ask for a small charge to cover our expenses and raise funds to buy more acid free storage boxes, melanex envelopes etc, donations are always welcome!

The current charges are £15 per person per day which includes entry to the Museum. We are happy to scan or photocopy material for you at £1.50p per A4 photocopy £2.50 per A3, and £2 per scan. You can purchase a digital camera licence for £25 per day.

Gunnerside Website
www.gunnerside.info/
Here you'll find information about the history and geography of various places in Upper Swaledale from Healaugh to Tan Hill including Angram, Ivelet, Feetham, Keld, Low Row, Muker, Satron and Thwaite. They regularly add to their content of photographs, maps, early baptism records, old wills and letters, early postcard views, memorial inscriptions and census records - an invaluable resource for genealogy/family history researchers.

Genuki
www.genuki.org.uk/
The aim of GENUKI is to serve as a "virtual reference library" of genealogical information that is of particular relevance to the UK & Ireland. It is a noncommercial service, provided by an ever-growing group of volunteers in cooperation with the Federation of Family History Societies and a number of its member societies.

In the main, the information that is provided in GENUKI relates to primary historical material, rather than material resulting from genealogists' ongoing research, such as GEDCOM files.
